Brown presses Wen on inmate

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown pressed Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao by phone Thursday to consider the mental health of Akmal Shaikh, who is on death row in China for carrying heroin, Brown's spokesman said.

"What the prime minister asked the premier to do was to ensure that mental health considerations were properly considered in the Chinese government's review of the case," Brown's spokesman told reporters.
