BP reveals oil discovery
British energy giant BP has made a huge oil discovery in the Gulf of Mexico after drilling one of the industry's deepest-ever wells, it said yesterday, in a further boost for crude supplies.
"BP announced today a giant oil discovery at its Tiber Prospect (well) in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico," the company said in a statement.
"The Tiber well was drilled to a total depth of approximately 35,055 feet (10,685 meters) making it one of the deepest wells ever drilled by the oil and gas industry," BP added.
Poorest worst hit: ADB
Climate change threatens to bring food and water shortages to 1.6 billion people in South Asia, with the region's poorest likely to be worst hit, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) said yesterday.
New research by the ADB shows that if current climate trends persist until 2050, maize yields in South Asia will fall by 17 percent, wheat by 12 percent and rice by 10 percent.
Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India and Nepal are "particularly vulnerable to falling crop yields," the bank said.
